There is a reason why we can hear truth, know truth, but that truth never changes us. The reason is because we don’t fully understand. Knowledge is in the mind, but understanding is in the heart.

The effects of not understanding are found in the parable of the sower. The only type of person who bears fruit is a person who hears the word and understands. When they understand, they will produce a crop much greater than what was planted.

From my experience, I was just able to tell when truth went from my mind to my heart. I knew this because I felt it. When something internal changes, we can almost feel that change happening.

Nothing externally changes until we change internally. To be able to change, we not only need to know the truth in our minds but understand it in our hearts as well. This is a work only the Holy Spirit can do in us so we must pray and ask God for understanding and do so relentlessly because understanding is far more valuable than any earthly possession we can have.
